About this project

Bertie has been quilting since childhood. She has hand-made quilts for friends and family - graduations, weddings, births - always a labor of love. The intricacies of the designs and the time it takes to complete each one makes these quilts a cherished gift by all who have been lucky enough to receive them.

When a friend and Broadway props designer needed a quilt for the grandparents' bed in the Charlie and the Chocolate Factory production, he called Bertie. It was this opportunity that prompted Bertie to open up for commissions from the public, and ask me to help her with a website.

I brainstormed potential names for her new venture and cross referenced them with available domains. From that list, we settled on Stitch Studio NYC.

I started this project with the logo. I find this method to helpful when starting from scratch. It brings me into the client's frame of mind quickly, and then dictates fonts, colors, etc. that shape the brand. Everything after this refers back to the brand.

For inspiration, I looked through the photos that Bertie wanted to feature on her site. I wanted to incorporate some common and recognizable quilting pattern into the logo. Above is the first draft of concepts I sent Bertie. She immediately gravitated towards gingham background design. Below is the second round of logo edits, after we had settled on fonts, spacing, and a color palette.

After settling on a final logo, it was time to build the website. After the intial build, she wanted to be able to update the site on her own, so I chose Squarespace (I am quite familiar with the platform) for its simplicity and user friendly UI, not to mention that out of all the plug-n-play site builders out there, it is my favorite by leaps and bounds.

Bertie is not a flashy person and so I knew I wanted to reflect her practical nature in the site layout. Then, after viewing the quilt photos, I realized that the designs truly speak for themselves. The site's purpose was simply to diplay her work and let the vibrant colors and intricate patterns shine.
